07/04/2010 Peruvian Shamanism

Most shaman have the same goal: to act as a go-between between spirits and humans to bring about healing for the benefit of the community or the individual. However, shamanic healers rely on power sources within their local environment. “In the Peruvian Andes a branch of Inca shamans work with the mountain spirits,” explains Dawn Paul, who received her calling to the shamanic path during a vision at Machu Picchu, and subsequently trained with the Q’ero Indians.

“The Q’ero are a tiny nation of around 600 indigenous people, who live in tiny clusters of villages high in the mountains of the Peruvian Andes. To them, the natural world is alive and vibrating with consciousness, with energy they call kausay pacha.

To the Q’ero, there are only two types of energy: natural energy called sami and heavy and discordant energy of a lower vibration called hucha, which is often man made. Manipulation of these two energies is the focus of the medicine people of the Q’ero, known as Paqos. Paqos follow one of two paths; either the path of the earth, or the path of the powerful mountain spirits. The former source their power and information from the land, and are highly knowledgeable about plant medicine. They are also master ceremonialists and spend much of their time making prayer bundles. The latter are able to summon up the mountain spirit, draw it to an altar, ask questions and receive guidance directly.”

Dawn continues: “In my healing I draw from and adapt the Q’ero ways. At each session I carry out a full energy diagnosis to see what needs to be done (for the client). This involves clearing up the chakras and the energy body, (so the person feels unburdened) and removing any blocks. Then I carry out a soul retrieval to bring back any parts of the client that have been lost along their life’s journey. Pretty much everyone suffers soul loss at some point, so it is important to get those parts back. The good thing about shamanic healing is that it works very quickly, so that people can get on with their lives.”
