This is such an important campaign. Before being involved with this industry, I never imagined how much abuse roadworkers face from the public. Stamp It Out aims to make it socially unacceptable for people to abuse public-facing workers. I’m baffled that this isn’t already the case. People who verbally or physically abuse workers should be ashamed. Embarrassed. Mocked by their friends. It’s a weak thing to do, and it’s only done by people who can’t get a grip on the day-to-day frustrations that come with being an adult. I don’t think I’d do well in a public-facing role these days – my time behind a bar was when I was far more tolerant of nonsense! – and I hugely admire the ability of operatives to keep working to improve the road network despite the kind of daily abuse they face. But they shouldn’t have to face it. It’s heart-breaking that it’s seen as the norm. TBF Traffic has consistently backed the campaign against roadworker abuse. Speaking to Peter Ryland, Darren Clark, Ben Licence, and lots of others about this topic, you can tell how much they care about and want to protect their staff. Let’s hope the public view shifts to match.
