DATA CENTRE COOLING

DATA CENTRE COOLING

Celsius Design Limited have supplied and installed more Evaporative cooling systems in Data Centres, Computer Rooms, Server Rooms and IT Rooms than any other company in the World. Providing a Low Carbon Cooling and Green cooling alternative to air conditioning.

This is the ideal way to cool your Data Centre and save thousands of pounds on installation costs, annual running costs and also thousands of tonnes of Carbon emissions per annum. Environmentally friendly, low energy cooling at its best.

Our services include:

- Data centre cooling
- Data centre ventilation
- IT cooling
- Comms room ventilation
- Server room cooling
- Evaporative cooling
- Comms room cooling
- Low carbon cooling

low carbon cooling data centre ventiliation

We can design, supply and install Energy efficient Evaporative cooling systems for Data centres with cooling loads as low as 10KW to over 2,000KW, the bigger the Data Centre, the bigger the savings.

We have installed some of the largest Data Centre Evaporative air cooling systems in the world, for example, for BlueChip Limited, providing over 720KW of evaporative cooling for their co-location site in Bedford and provided over 1000KW of Data centre ventilation for 4D Data Centres in Byfleet, both systems includes high efficiency filters and PLC control systems interlinked into their Building management systems for accurate and reliable control.

data centre cooling systems

The systems are fully ASHRAE compliant for temperature and keeps their Power usage effectiveness (PUE) as low as 1.2, this is very low, as many Data Centres have a PUE well in excess of 3, mainly due to the use of inefficient, environmentally damaging refrigeration based cooling systems.

Typically, in most conventionally cooled Data Centres nearly half the total energy consumption is used to cool the IT equipment. Data Centre cooling has the equivalent Carbon Footprint to Air Travel with Celsius EcoCooling Evaporative cooling this can be dramatically reduced and provide efficient low carbon cooling.

The Data Centre Cooling systems are modular and built up of individual 35KW modules and typically each EcoCooling unit used you will save you over 60 tonnes of carbon per annum and save over £13,000.00 in running costs when compared to conventional air conditioning. So, typically your Data centre cooling or Data centre ventilation project could pay for itself in under two years.

We have a designed and installed two cooling systems for both Nottingham Trent University and Worcester Technical College that are totally Carbon Neutral, the EcoCooling units are powered by PV Cells on the roofs of the buildings meaning that they really are using low Carbon Cooling in providing Data Centre cooling with no Carbon emissions what so ever!!

Evaporative cooling is a straightforward method of cooling air without using refrigerants. A direct air evaporative cooler, using wetted filter pads, cools the air by bringing it into contact with water. Water evaporates into the air stream and cools it. The amount of cooling is dependent upon the temperature and relative humidity of the air.

In the UK the maximum theoretical air off temperature is 22°C. In practice, the actual temperatures achieved when evaporative cooling data centres in UK conditions can approach 24°C on the warmest days. This allows full compliance with ASHRAE temperature standards.

In an evaporative cooling unit, water is brought into the cooler from the mains water supply and is pumped up to the top of the unit using a circulation pump. The water is then dispersed over the Celdek pads using a water distribution system which allows the water to flow continually over the pads. The pads become saturated, the air is drawn through the pads and the water evaporates causing the air to cool.

The cool air is then ducted around the building to provide cooling using an energy-efficient axial fan

When cooling data centres the performance of a Celsius EcoCooler is dependent upon the temperature of the air and its relative humidity. Higher temperatures give greater cooling. Low relative humidity gives greater cooling.

Supply Air Temperature Achieved

Amb. Relative Humidity
Temp 20% 30% 40% 50% 60% 70% 80%
20°C 12.0 13.0 14.5 15.5 16.5 17.5 18.5
25°C 16.0 17.0 18.5 20.0 21.0 22.0 23.0
30°C 19.5 21.0 22.5 24.0 25.0 26.5 28.0
35°C 23.0 25.0 26.5 28.5 30.0 31.5 32.5

When using evaporative air cooling in the UK during a typical hot period the ambient temperature approaches 30°C. This coincides with a Relative Humidity of under 50%. As the air passes over the pads it will typically cool down to about 22°C. There is less cooling in the night as the temperatures reduce and the humidity rises.

Evaporative Cooling data centres are extremely energy efficient due to the simple nature of the process when compared to using conventional air conditions.

The Celsius EcoCooling approach meets the stringent requirements of Data Centres in the UK, the following diagram indicates where the Celsius EcoCooling system can put your Data Centre.

Evaporative cooling
We have monitored the performance of many of our systems and found they have achieved impressive results in the Data Centres, the following plots are taken from a recent installation we undertook with Warwickshire County Council

In the same project when the Celsius system was turned on and cooling was provided by the energy-efficient EcoCoolers instead of the four Airedale CRAC units the energy consumption of the whole building dropped dramatically, this graph was provided by the Council and it illustrates the reduction perfectly.

How does a CREC manage very hot days?

In a temperate climate, the relative humidity falls as the temperature rises. August 2003 saw record temperatures in Britain exceeding 35°C with a relative humidity of 21%. It is this relationship which allows an EcoCooling CREC to maintain cold aisle temperatures of 21°C for over 99% of the time and never go above 23°C.

How much maintenance is required?

It is normal to maintain an EcoCooling CREC every 3 months. This is a simple operation of cleaning and validation of settings. Since the CRECs are normally external to the building there is no requirement for maintenance engineers to enter the server room or data centre

What about spare parts?

EcoCooling holds a stock of all spare parts at their warehouse in Bury St Edmunds. These are available for immediate despatch.

How long do the filter pads last?

Filter pads last from 3 to 5 years.

Is the water recirculated?

Yes, the water is recirculated until the evaporation has concentrated it to its scaling point or when the cooling is turned off and the cooler automatically drains.

What happens in freezing conditions?

An automatic valve is normally fitted to completely drain the water systems and eliminate any risk of frost damage.

What is the warranty?

The EcoCooling CREC has a parts-only warranty of 12 months.

Do the pads clean the air?

Yes, the pad will filter out larger particles such as dust or pollen. Insect screens are also fitted as standard.

Is the EcoCooling CREC suitable for all IT equipment?

Older equipment such as mainframe computers and paper media systems require close control of relative humidity and so evaporative cooling cannot be used.

What other applications can EcoCoolers be used for?

EcoCooling is ideal for the cooling of UPS rooms and other plant rooms. Air conditioning systems in offices, call centres and IT training facilities can all be replaced with EcoCooling evaporative cooling systems. Fresh air systems have many benefits in these applications beyond reduction of cost and environmental impact.
