When To Get One
Weeks, not months
You should have a clear idea of how long you need to borrow money for. If you expect to be able to pay off the loan in full by the next payday then you are probably fine. If you are planning on getting an extension on the loan before you even get the loan, then you are probably better off waiting and going to a different source where interest rates may be lower.
Minor issues
The amount you need to borrow should be less than half your paycheque, unless you are expecting to come into a large lump sum by your next payday. Otherwise you will find yourself short of cash again, and this is not the outcome you should be looking for.
